Spring AC Tune-Up: What It Includes and Why It Matters

Apr 29, 2026 · Uncategorized

Late March through early May is the right window for a spring AC tune-up in Massachusetts. Get it done before the first heat wave and you avoid the inevitable late-June emergency-service rush — when techs are booked out two weeks and prices spike.

What a Real Tune-Up Includes

There’s a spread between contractors on what a ‘tune-up’ actually means. A real tune-up should include all of the following:

  • Coil cleaning. The outdoor condenser coil collects pollen, leaves, dust, and lawn clippings over the off-season. We hose it down (carefully — coil fins bend easily) and clear the airflow path.
  • Refrigerant level check. Properly charged systems run efficiently and last longer. Low refrigerant means a leak somewhere in the system — which we find and fix as a separate repair if present.
  • Electrical inspection. Capacitors, contactors, wiring connections, disconnect switches. Loose connections are the #1 cause of mid-season failures.
  • Condensate drain clearing. The drain that carries condensate out of the indoor coil clogs every couple of years. A clogged drain backs water into your basement or attic. We flush and clean it.
  • Filter replacement. A clean filter is mandatory for proper operation. We replace yours and tell you what size to keep on hand.
  • Thermostat calibration. Modern smart thermostats usually self-calibrate. Older mercury or mechanical thermostats benefit from a check.
  • Static pressure test. Measures duct system airflow restriction. High static pressure means something is wrong — undersized return, blocked filter, kinked duct.
  • Temperature differential check. Air leaving the supply vents should be 18-22°F cooler than air entering the return. A smaller differential indicates a problem.
  • Visual inspection of indoor and outdoor units. Rust, oil stains, refrigerant leaks, vibration, abnormal sounds.

Why It Matters

Three reasons. Catch problems before they become breakdowns. A failing capacitor in March is a $200 part swap; the same failure in late July when you’re sweating is a $400 emergency call plus you wait two days for a tech. Maintain manufacturer warranty. Most AC manufacturers require documented annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid. If you skip tune-ups and your compressor fails at year 7 of a 10-year warranty, the manufacturer may decline coverage. Maintain efficiency. A dirty coil, a clogged filter, and low refrigerant together can cut a system’s efficiency by 15-25%. That’s a real number on your July-August electric bills.

Cost

A standard residential AC tune-up in our service area runs $179-$249 in 2026. Adding a refrigerant top-off (if needed and slow leak isn’t found) adds $80-$200 depending on the refrigerant type. Most tune-ups take 60-90 minutes per system. Members of our Happy Home Membership program receive complimentary tune-ups and priority scheduling — call us to learn more about whether that makes sense for your home.

When to Schedule

Late March through early May is the sweet spot. The weather is consistently above 60°F (you need that to test refrigerant), the techs aren’t yet swamped with breakdown calls, and you’ve got 4-6 weeks of buffer before the first heat wave. After Memorial Day weekend, the schedules get tight; by July 4th they’re booked solid.

What’s NOT Included in a Tune-Up

A tune-up is preventive — it doesn’t include parts replacement (capacitors, contactors, motors), refrigerant beyond a small top-off, ductwork repair, or system upgrades. If we find something during the tune-up, we tell you, give you a flat-rate price for the repair, and let you decide whether to do it that day or schedule separately. We never start work without your approval.
