Settlement and Cambridge Origins

The land that became Newton was originally part of Cambridge — known as the ‘New Town’ or Cambridge Village. As the population grew across the Charles River from Cambridge proper, residents petitioned to be set off, and the town of Cambridge Village was established in 1688. In 1691 the name was simplified to Newton.

The Mill Era and Industrial Newton Upper Falls

The Charles River runs along Newton’s southern border, and the falls at what became Newton Upper Falls and Newton Lower Falls powered an early industrial economy. Paper mills, snuff mills, and wool mills operated through the 18th and 19th centuries. The 1853 Echo Bridge — a stone arch railway bridge over the Charles in Newton Upper Falls — is one of the more dramatic 19th-century engineering monuments in eastern Massachusetts.

The Streetcar Suburb and Village System

The expansion of streetcar lines from Boston in the 1890s drove Newton’s transformation into a streetcar suburb. Each rail and trolley stop became the center of a village — Auburndale developed around its commuter rail station, Newton Centre around its Green Line stop. By 1900 Newton was already organized around the village system that defines it today.

Becoming a City

Newton was officially chartered as a city in 1873 to manage its growing population, but unlike most New England cities (Boston, Worcester, Lowell), Newton retained its rural-feeling village structure. The city has no single ‘downtown’ — it’s a city of 13 downtowns. This made Newton one of the most desirable residential suburbs of Boston by the early 20th century, drawing professional families who wanted a small-town feel with city amenities.

Modern Newton

Today Newton is one of the wealthiest cities in Massachusetts and consistently ranks among the safest cities in the United States. The school system is regarded as one of the best in the state. The 13 villages each retain individual character — Newton Centre’s pondside park and bookstores, Newton Highlands’ Cold Spring Park, Auburndale’s commuter rail-anchored downtown, West Newton’s restaurant strip. The Charles River Greenway along the southern border ties them together.

Plumbing & Heating in Newton

Newton’s village structure means we see every era of housing in the same city. Newton Centre and Newton Highlands have older Victorians with original cast iron drains; Auburndale has post-war ranches with copper that’s now end-of-life; recent teardown rebuilds have modern PEX everywhere.
