From Woburn to Burlington
The land that became Burlington was the western portion of Woburn — a frontier farming district. As that area grew through the late 1700s, residents petitioned to be set off as their own town, and Burlington was officially incorporated on February 28, 1799. The town was named for Burlington, England, though no specific reason for the choice survives in the records.
Farming Town
Through the 1800s and into the early 1900s, Burlington remained a quiet farming community. The 1890 census recorded only about 600 residents. The town had a one-room schoolhouse, a few churches, a post office in the general store, and farms producing apples, dairy, and produce for the Boston market. The rural character persisted longer here than in most towns this close to Boston.
Route 128 and the Burlington Mall
The completion of Route 128 — Massachusetts’ first divided high-speed circumferential highway — between 1948 and 1958 fundamentally remade Burlington. The road cut through the southern part of town and quickly attracted office parks, light industry, and retail. The Burlington Mall opened in 1968 and became one of the largest shopping centers in New England.
The Tech Corridor
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Burlington became a key node in Massachusetts’ Route 128 technology corridor. Companies like Sun Microsystems, Lotus Development, and later Endurance International Group, Oracle, and Avid Technology established major offices in Burlington. The town’s daytime employment population grew to exceed its residential population.
Modern Burlington
Today Burlington is a hybrid town — about 27,000 residents but daytime population swelling to 60,000+ from commuters. The Burlington Mall has been redeveloped with mixed-use additions including the District Avenue dining and entertainment cluster. The town’s residential character is mostly post-war ranches and 1990s-2000s subdivisions, with a small historic center around the Common.
Plumbing & Heating in Burlington
Burlington’s housing is mostly post-war single-family homes plus newer subdivisions. We do a lot of central AC and heat pump work in town — the housing stock is right for it, and Mass Save rebates are popular here.
